FLOORBALL FEATURES AT NBL MATCH

Saturday 18th January 2003 was the greatest experience for 13 Western Australian Floorballers! Floorball was played during half time at Perths’ Challenge Stadium where the Perth Wildcats played against the Canberra Cannons in a National Basketball League match.

The demonstration match was played in front of a sold out crowd of around 4,500, and it was as though they were playing in a local league Grand Final in Finland!

Half time, eight minutes, SHOWTIME! That was all it took for 12 WA Floorballers and a referee to fascinate a sold out crowd of around 4,500.

40 seconds of court coverage warm-ups and 20 seconds of target shooting was enough to motivate the crowd for more! The whistle was blown and there it was, FACE-OFF! They exploded with intense energy which immediately sparked up the crowd for an exciting game of FLOORBALL!

Shots were fired at goals and a deep echo of "Oooh" was generated from the crowd bringing the stadium to life as the ball zoomed past the roof of the net. Shots were blocked, tackles were made and what a match it was!

As the final whistle was blown, we knew we had more to demonstrate, we knew we had more to offer, and we knew we had more to inspire the crowd with a game of Floorball.

We would like to thank the staff of Challenge Stadium for the opportunity for us to exhibit the exciting game of Floorball.

Furthermore, thanks to Australian Floorball Association (AFA) President Kevan Lyons and the Floorball Association of Western Australia (FAWA) Committee members and friends for their efforts in making this event an overwhelming success!

No doubt we will offer this thrilling entertainment again when the next opportunity arises.

The West Australian - 15th January 2003

"De-icing hockey SUBTRACT the ice but not the hockey from ice hockey and you have ... floorball. Oh, yes, you've got to take away the skates and some of the violence, too. Floorball is similar to indoor hockey but instead of a small nub on the end of the stick, there's a nice long blade. Canadians eschew floorball because they have more ice than floor space and spearing and slashing are illegal. But the new sport is gaining popularity in Europe, so much so that a World Championship has been held every second year since 1996. Floorball will emerge from it's local anonymity when an exhibition will be staged at half-time of the Perth Wildcats-Canberra Cannons basketball game at Challenge Stadium on Saturday." - Dave Hughes
